A migraine is a reoccurring, debilitating headache that can lead to nausea, vomiting, chronic pain, light sensitivity and can even change your ability to perform daily tasks. This neurological disease is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the United States, with over 39 million men and women suffering from migraines regularly. New research shows that migraines could very well be linked to other common mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety. Although, medical professionals are not 100% sure if one causes the other, there is significant evidence putting individuals at a higher risk for developing these and other life-threatening mental health disorders.

For example, Dawn Buse from the Montefiore Headache Center, has found evidence that people who already suffer from migraines are 5x more likely to slip into depression and/or develop severe anxiety. This makes perfect sense— who would not feel lapses of sadness when their whole life is constantly disrupted by pain? There is also a possibility that genetics play an important role in the chance of developing depression, migraines and anxiety. According to Buse, 30-50% of people with migraines also suffer from severe, irrational anxiety.

On a positive note, there are multiple treatments options available to combat the symptoms of depression, anxiety, and migraines. One such treatment is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT helps to reprogram the neural connections associated with how a patient views a situation, therefore changing their reaction and behaviors related to stress. Another common treatment option is, of course, medication. Relaxation and holistic approaches can also help make depression and anxiety more manageable. If you can learn to cope, you will gradually become happier and more motivated to continue living life to the fullest.

For those instances where no treatment options seems to deliver relief, ketamine infusions are a highly effective option. Ketamine treats various mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and bipolar disorders. It’s also effective for chronic pain conditions—including migraine headaches. We have personally seen ketamine work rapidly and effectively in upwards of 70% of our patients.
